Facial implants are used to improve certain facial features like jaw line, chin, cheek etc. The surgery can be elective or essential as a result of prior surgery to the face. Facial transplant is usually performed by the plastic surgeon o improve the facial contour.
Facial implant is done on an outpatient basis, where the length of the surgery depends on which part of the face is undergoing the surgery. Usually, the surgery lasts for 1-2 hours.
The recovery after the facial implant is very quick. However, if the person is a smoker, he/she should quit smoking for a certain period of time before and after the surgery.
As with any other surgery, there are certain risks and side effects associated with this surgery as well. These include development of bruise and swellings. If there is an implant inserted inside the patient’s body, there is a risk of the facial implant shifting. If this happens, then follow-up operation may be prescribed. The doctor should be contacted immediately in the following cases:
• If the patient develops a fever of 100F or more
• If the patient experiences abnormal pain or swelling
• If the patients experiences abnormal discharge (like pus) from the incision site
